Fleetwood defeats Lower Dauphin, advances to District 3 Class 3A boys soccer semifinals [updated]

A stout defensive performance helped Fleetwood clinch a spot in the PIAA Class 3A playoffs Thursday night.

The No. 4 seed Tigers held fifth-seeded Lower Dauphin to just two shots in a 2-0 win in a District 3 Class 3A boys soccer quarterfinal at Fleetwood.

The Tigers (17-5) will play at No. 1 seed Hershey at 7 p.m. Monday in the semifinals. In addition, Fleetwood will play in the state tournament, which begins Nov. 9.

“(We) fought like warriors tonight,” Fleetwood coach Keith Schlegel said. “We defended well.”

Davin Millisock gave the Tigers the lead midway through the first half with a powerful shot from just inside the 18-yard box. Oscar Flores was credited with the assist.

“Davin is a player,” Schlegel said. “He wants to do the right things, and he does.”

Fleetwood’s second goal came off the foot of Flores with under a minute to go in the second half, effectively sealing it. Josh Candelario had the assist.

Possession between the two sides was largely even, however, Fleetwood pressured the Falcons (10-8-2) all over the pitch. The tight defense wreaked havoc on Lower Dauphin, which struggled to advance the ball past the midfield.

“We didn’t really give them any good looks on goal, so that was a plus,” Schlegel said. “We were reading things really well defensively.”

Both teams had a few scoring opportunities in the first half, but the majority of the shots were off target. That trend continued in the second half, as both teams struggled to put a shot on the net.

The Tigers gained momentum on offense late in the second half, which ultimately led to the goal by Flores. On the other side, the Falcons generated only a few isolated attacks in the final 40 minutes.

Play resided in the midfield for long periods in both halves. Fleetwood outshot Lower Dauphin 5-2.

“This will help with confidence with the team,” Schlegel said about the win. “We’re excited about the next round.”
