Fleetwood defeats Wyomissing in Berks III boys basketball

Fleetwood moved one step closer to its first division title since 1979 with a 53-44 win over Wyomissing in a Berks Conference Division III matchup on Monday night at Fleetwood.

Jake Karnish scored 16 points to lead the Tigers (7-2, 13-4) over the second-place Spartans (5-3, 8-7). Fleetwood has 1.5-game lead and has swept Wyomissing this season. The Tigers have two league games remaining; the Spartans have three.

Both defenses played tough and limited good shot opportunities in the first quarter. Aiden Soumas scored five points for Fleetwood in the final minute to tie it at 11-11 after one.

Wyomissing used fast-paced passing to create better shot options in the second quarter. At the end of the first half, Wyomissing led 20-19.

The Spartans had turnovers on their first four possessions of the second half, which led to a 6-0 run for the Tigers.

With Fleetwood up 25-20, Wyomissing called a timeout with 5:58 left. Julian O’Brien hit a 3-pointer following the timeout to cut it to 25-23, but Fleetwood outscored the Spartans 15-7 in the quarter to lead 34-27 after three. Will Ryan had seven of the Tigers’ 15 third-quarter points.

Fleetwood scored the first points of the fourth quarter after another Wyomissing turnover led to a Soumas fastbreak layup. Turnovers and fouls continued to cost the Spartans in the fourth.

Karnish made a 3-pointer with 1:55 left to extend Fleetwood’s lead to 47-36.

The Tigers shot 10-of-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to put it away.

O’Brien scored a game-high 21 points for Wyomissing.
