Fleetwood rolls to 11-1 victory over Berks Catholic in Berks III softball matchup

Fleetwood has relied on its offensive firepower all season and the bats came alive once again as the Tigers defeated Berks Catholic 11-1 in six innings in a Berks Softball League Division III game at Lyons.

“We have two strengths: We hit the ball and we commit very few errors,” Fleetwood coach Eric Garman said. “We made one error and we had 11 hits. So yeah, you put the ball in play and good things will happen.”

The win on Fleetwood’s Senior Night gives the Tigers (9-2, 13-4) a one-game lead in the division over the Saints (7-2, 10-3). Fleetwood closes its league season at Schuylkill Valley Thursday. Berks Catholic hosts Wyomissing Thursday, hosts Oley Valley Friday and travels to Wyomissing Monday. Should the teams tie for first, the tiebreaker would go to District 3 power ratings since they split their regular season meetings.

Fleetwood was one spot ahead of Berks Catholic in the Class 4A power ratings heading into Wednesday’s game.

The Tigers did their part to keep it that way.

In the bottom of the sixth with the score 6-1, Saints starting pitcher Danielle Hayward was able to get two quick outs before the game got away from Berks Catholic.

Kylie Krauss started things off with a triple before Emily Miller brought her home with a single. Megan Brattley singled to put runners on first and second. Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Pytleski drove Miller home with a single. Amaris Torres reached on an error to load the bases.

Brattley scored on a wild pitch before freshman Morgan Koehler ended the game via the 10-run rule with a two-run single.

“I ran to first and was like ‘Games over!’, “Koehler said. “I was looking for changeup and then she threw me either a high fastball or a rise ball, and literally, I didn’t want to swing at it because it was high but I got it good enough to get a little line drive, a little dinker, and it was good enough to get the runs.”

The Tigers led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth when the bats first came alive. Katie Stump opened the inning with a single, which was followed up with a base hit by Krauss off a well-placed bunt to put runners on first and second.

Miller then executed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up.

Hayward intentionally walked Brattley to load the bases and was able to get Pytleski to pop up foul for the second out.

One run scored on a wild pitch, then Torres smacked a hard-hit groundball through the right side to score Miller and Brattley and make it 5-1.

Koehler hit a double to score Torres before the Saints got out of the inning.

Berks Catholic failed to record a hit after getting two, which led to a run, in the third inning. Marli Emrich hit a single in the to score Hayward.

Hayward and Pytleski each had seven strikeouts.
