Third baseman Trevor Schwecke hit his first home run of the season, a three-run blast, to break the game open as the Reading Fightin Phils beat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 12-7 on Wednesday.
Schwecke’s home run was part of an eight-run seventh inning that broke a 3-3 tie after six innings.
Journeyman pitcher Kolby Allard, making his first start for Reading after being transferred from the Florida Complex League Phillies, had a rough debut, giving up two first-inning home runs.
Allard lasted just 1.2 innings, giving up three runs, all earned, and three hits. He walked two and struck out four.
The 26-year-old left-hander from Anaheim, California, made his Major League debut for the Atlanta Braves on July 31, 2018. He was traded to the Texas Rangers in 2019 and spent four seasons there, until he was traded back to the Braves in November 2022. The Phillies signed Allard in January as a free agent.
Allard gave up a two-run home run to Kevin Parada and a solo shot by Brandon McIlwain in the top of the first.
The eight runs for the Fightin Phils in the seventh were a season high.
Along with Schwecke’s blast, Carlos De La Cruz drove in two runs and Caleb Ricketts, Carson Taylor and Marcus Lee Sang each knocked in one.
The Fightin Phils and Rumble Ponies return to the field today at 6:45 p.m. for game three of this week’s six-game series.
Lefthander Matt Osterberg will start for Reading, and Binghamton will send righthander Nolan McLean to the mound. Pregame radio coverage gets underway at 6:30 p.m. on the Reading Fightin Phils Radio Network. A video stream is available via MiLB TV or the Bally Live App.
