Francis Camara was approved as the head boys basketball coach at Reading High at Tuesday’s Reading School Board meeting.
Camara, a 2008 Reading High grad, has been an assistant for the Red Knights since 2019-20.
Practice for the 2023-24 season began last Friday.
He takes over for Rick Perez, who resigned last month after compiling a 281-74 record and leading the Red Knights to three PIAA Class 6A titles, five District 3 championships and six Berks Conference titles in 12 seasons. He led Reading High to a 32-1 record last season, winning county, district and state titles.
Perez, now as assistant at Muhlenberg, had said when he resigned that Camara would be taking over.
The school district still advertised the opening.
Camara lettered in football, basketball and track at Reading High.
He averaged 1.4 points per game in 19 games as a senior for a Red Knights team that went 30-1 and won Berks and District 3 titles. He averaged 2.9 points per game over 27 games as a junior.
In football, Camara was a three-year starter on defense for the Red Knights.
As a senior, he was a first-team Lancaster-Lebanon Section 1 selection at linebacker and a second-team pick at running back.
He went on to play football at Holy Cross.
Reading High opens its season Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Central York.
