Gaucher’s game-winner lifts Reading Royals over Maine in Game 5 of ECHL North Division semifinals

The Reading Royals got back in the win column on Wednesday night.

The Royals defeated Maine 4-3 in Game 5 of the ECHL North Division semifinals in Portland, Maine, to take a 3-2 series lead.

Reading forward Jacob Gaucher scored the game-winning goal just over five minutes into the third period. Defenseman Will MacKinnon and Charlie Gerard had the assists.

The Royals opened the scoring early in the first period with an unassisted goal from forward Charlie Gerard. The Mariners tied it less than three minutes later on a goal from forward Tyler Hinam.

Reading took a 2-1 lead later in the period on a goal from forward Max Newton. Forward Shane Sellar and defenseman Garrett McFadden were credited with the assists.

Maine scored twice in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Forward Mitchell Fossier scored on the power play and forward Curtis Hall also found the back of the net.

The Royals tied it 3-3 just 47 seconds into the third period as Newton scored his second goal of the night. Gerard and McFadden had the assists.

Reading goaltender Pat Nagle was stellar in net, recording 40 saves. Mariners goalie François Brassard made 29 saves and suffered his first loss as a starter in the series.

The two teams will face off in Game 6 on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Santander Arena. Reading also will host Game 7, if necessary, on Sunday at 3 p.m.
