Wilson grad Zakiyah Winfield, a senior at the University of Buffalo, has teamed with local businesses to provide a bus trip for members of the Reading High and Wilson girls basketball teams to the Bulls’ home game Saturday.
The players will have a meet-and-greet with Winfield, her teammates and coaches.
“Zakiyah wanted to give back to her community,” Winfield’s mother, Shon Baker, wrote in an email. “She wants girls to follow their dreams no matter where they start off at. It’s all about how you finish.”
Reading High coach Rashida Suber said 15 of her players have signed up for the trip. Only one player from Wilson is able to go. There is no cost for the players.
“They’re excited,” said Suber, who is making the trip. “It’s a great experience for my girls to see something different, to see another person that’s from Reading playing in college.
“I have kids playing in college from Reading High and we go to their games as well. They’re all in arm’s reach. This one is a lot farther away.”
Suber said Reading High’s participation in the trip came about because she and Baker were classmates at Reading High.
Buffalo (6-11, 11-15) plays Western Michigan at 2 p.m., and needs a win to qualify for the Mid-American Conference Tournament and extend its season.
Winfield, a 5-7 guard, is averaging 14.3 points and 10.5 rebounds this season, her first with the Bulls. She transferred after playing four seasons at Division II Glenville State, where she helped the Pioneers win a national championship last season.
The businesses paying for the trip are Debbie Boston (Paparazzi Accessories/344083), The Plug, Glossy Nails, Beckett’s Rib Joint, Grille Then Chill Bar and Lounge, Stay Hostin’ Entertainment and Juice Mee.
