Gov. Mifflin girls earn berth in state water polo tournament

Ella Tice scored five goals to help Gov. Mifflin defeat Upper Dublin Saturday night at Wilson to earn a berth in the Pennsylvania State Water League League Girls Tournament.

Gov. Mifflin (15-9) advances from the play-in tournament to the eight-team state tournament that will start Friday at Wilson’s Roy G. Snyder Natatorium.

Gov. Mifflin will join Wilson, Cumberland Valley, North Penn, Pennridge and North Allegheny, which earned spots in the state tournament based on their regular season records.

Wissahickon also earned a berth in the state tournament with an 11-9 win over Muhlenberg.

Gov. Mifflin and Upper Dublin were locked in a tight game for a half. The score was tied 4-4 after one quarter and the Mustangs took a 6-5 halftime lead. Gov. Mifflin dominated the second half, holding Upper Dublin to three goals while scoring eight.

Abby Steckiel, Hannah Gann, Emma Friedlander and Aubrey Miller scored two goals each for Gov .Mifflin.

Muhlenberg (19-7) defeated Exeter (14-9) before losing to Wissahickon.

Samara Eschleman had seven goals and three assists and Sydney Gring has six goals and four assists to lead Muhlenberg. Megan Unruh had nine goals and an assist for Exeter.

In the loss to Wissahickon, Gring scored six goals.

In boys play-in games, Reading High (14-10) and Muhlenberg (15-10) were eliminated in the semifinals.

Upper Dublin defeated the Red Knights as Tristan Hertzog had five goals and three assists and Baylor Kobularcik had five goals and two assists for Reading. Upper Dublin went on to defeat Wissahickon 9-6 to earn a spot in the boys state tournament at North Penn on Nov. 5-6.

Hazleton defeated Muhlenberg 15-8 as Beau Stricker had four goals and an assist for the Muhls. Hazleton went on to defeat Cumberland Valley 11-10 to advance to the state tournament.

Boys teams that already had earned state tournament berths were Wilson, Gov. Mifflin, North Penn, La Salle and North Allegheny.
