Gov. Mifflin passes by Harrisburg, 49-13

With Nick Singleton standing with him in the backfield, Gov. Mifflin quarterback Eden Johnson doesn’t get a lot of opportunity to throw the football.

But he showed he’s more than capable of doing that. Johnson completed three passes, all for touchdowns, Friday night to help Gov. Mifflin defeat Harrisburg 49-13 at Mifflin Stadium in a battle of previously undefeated teams ranked in the top 15 in Pennsylvania.

“They had so many men in the box we felt like we had to throw,” Johnson said. “We can do it all.”

Singleton had his usual big night, but he was thrown for losses on three straight carries late in the first half when the Mustangs (4-0) were unable to shake the Cougars (3-1). Singleton even fumbled late in the first half to set up Harrisburg’s first touchdown, which trimmed Gov. Mifflin’s lead to 14-7 at the half.

But Johnson answered in the second half, throwing touchdown passes of 51 and 18 yards to Ayden Martin and 21 yards to Aidan Young on his only three pass attempts.

“He was on the money all night,” said Gov. Mifflin coach Jeff Lang. “They were playing us tight to the line of scrimmage, coming off the receivers, not even respecting them. We’ve got to take advantage of it.”

The Cougars played that type of defense in an effort to slow Singleton, who played the first half with his future coach at Penn State, James Franklin, looking on from the sideline.

But it only slowed Berks County’s all-time rushing and touchdown leader for a short time.

“They’re a physical team,” Lang said. “They’ve got athletic kids. The first half I think they did a heck of a job but the second half we wore them down a little bit and we able to capitalize on some things.”

Singleton finished with 155 yards on 18 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 53, 7 and 46 yards.

The Gov. Mifflin defense did the rest by forcing four turnovers and shutting down the Harrisburg offense after a long TD pass early in the third quarter trimmed the Mustangs’ lead to 21-13.

Aiden Gallen also scored a touchdown in his return from an injury to get Gov. Mifflin off to a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
