Gov. Mifflin, Schuylkill Valley, Oley Valley fall in District 3 girls basketball playoffs

Manheim Township 70, Gov. Mifflin 51

No. 11 seed Gov. Mifflin lost to No. 6 seed Manheim Township in a District 3 Class 6A girls basketball first-round game on Monday night at Neffsville.

The Blue Streaks led 16-12 after the first quarter. The Mustangs outscored Manheim Township 14-7 in the second quarter to lead 26-23 at the half.

The Blue Streaks outscored Gov. Mifflin 25-9 in the third quarter to put the game away. Ava Byrne led Manheim Township with 27 points, while teammate Sarah Kraus had 24 points.

Senior Taylor Koenig led the Mustangs with 15 points, while freshman Isabella Super had 12 points and freshman Hanna West had 10. Gov. Mifflin finishes its season 15-10.

Middletown 38, Schuylkill Valley 36

Middletown’s Jayla Koser made two free throws with four seconds to go to lift the No. 7 seed Blue Raiders to a win over No. 10 seed Schuylkill Valley in a District 3 Class 4A girls basketball first-round game on Monday night at Middletown.

Koser led all scorers with 23 points, including the game-winning free throw. The Blue Raiders forced a turnover on the Panthers’ final possession to seal the win.

Middletown led 13-6 after one quarter and 29-16 at the half. Schuylkill Valley outscored the Blue Raiders 10-5 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 34-26.

The Panthers carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, orchestrating a 10-2 run to tie it at 36-36 with 57 seconds left. There was no scoring for either team until Koser broke the tie with her pair of free throws.

Senior Juliana Stichter led Schuylkill Valley with 15 points, while sophomore Elyssa Sellers scored 12 points. The Panthers finish their season 15-9.

The Blue Raiders will play at No. 2 seed Wyomissing (25-0) in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 7 p.m.

York Catholic 65, Oley Valley 40

No. 5 seed Oley Valley lost to No. 4 seed York Catholic in a District 3 Class 3A girls basketball quarterfinal on Monday night at York.

The Fighting Irish led 17-16 after one quarter and 32-26 at the half. York Catholic began to pull away in the third quarter and led 48-36 after 24 minutes of play.

Senior Morgan Snyder led the Lynx with 18 points. Oley Valley finishes its season 17-7.
