Gov. Mifflin’s Jayleah Pletz wins third state championship in girls wrestling

Gov. Mifflin senior Jayleah Pletz won her third state championship in girls wrestling Sunday.

Pletz won the 106-pound championship at the MyHouse Girls State Wrestling Championships Sunday at Central Dauphin with a 10-8 victory over Bensalem’s Julia Horger in the final.

She was one of five Berks wrestlers to finish in the top eight and earn medals. Hamburg junior Isabella Wilkes finished fourth at 106, Exeter sophomore Liberty Furman fourth at 130, Wyomissing sophomore Olivia Tillman seventh at 148 and Tulpehocken sophomore Katalyna Borreli eighth at 142.

Pletz opened with a 38-second pin over Central Mountain’s Emma Scarborough. She pinned Seagertown’s Emma Spencer in 48 seconds in the quarterfinals, then defeated Williamsport’s Lillian Rumsey 5-4 in the tiebreaker in the semifinals.

Pletz won state titles at 101 pounds as a freshman and sophomore. She finished second at 106 pounds last season.

Wilkes earned a medal for the second straight year. She finished fifth at 106 last season.
