Group Continues 20-Year Tradition of Serving Christmas Eve Dinner

From Opportunity House

Carl and his wife, Cindy, joined a group to make dinner at Opportunity House in 2003. He didn’t envision it becoming part of his holiday tradition.

The next year, Carl and his wife returned to Opportunity House to serve Christmas Eve dinner to honor the memory of his son, Justin, who passed away in 2004. “While he never stayed at Opportunity House, he used resources like shelters throughout his life,” noted Stewart. Since Opportunity House was close to their home, they decided to make serving the Christmas Eve meal a family tradition.

In 2019, Carl lost his wife, and he began dedicating the Christmas Eve dinner to the memory of his son, Jason, and Carl’s wife, Cindy. “I love the joy of serving and helping others,” noted Stewart. This year, the group will serve about 85 individuals, including families and veterans. “It’s a rewarding experience, and it makes us smile to see people enjoying the food we serve,” he added.

Cooking Christmas Eve dinner is just one of the meals the group serves each year. “We cook on the fourth Sunday of every month,” noted Stewart, a self-described cooking enthusiast.

The group will be providing their traditional Christmas Eve dinner including turkey, ham, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, and delicious desserts.
