Hamburg hires former Hawks assistant Matt Hoffert as head football coach

Matt Hoffert, a Hamburg High School graduate and former assistant, was hired Monday as the Hawks new football coach.

Hoffert graduated from Hamburg in 2001 and served two stints as a Hawks assistant from 2005-09 and 2012-13. He spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Chestnut Hill College for its sprint football team.

He previously served as head coach at Kutztown High School from 2014-16 and guided the Cougars to a 4-6 record in 2016 after they went 0-11 and 0-10 in his first two seasons.

Hoffert replaces Jeff Chillot, who resigned in December after he guided the Hawks to a 7-4 record and their first District 3 playoff win in his only season.

Hoffert served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Fleetwood in 2019 and was perhaps the leading candidate to succeed Sean Gaul, who resigned following that 8-3 season. But the Fleetwood school board voted against hiring Hoffert in February 2020.

He was asked to re-apply for the position and did before he decided to withdraw his name from consideration in April 2020.

Hoffert also has coached at Allentown Central Catholic, Boyertown and Albright College. He played collegiately at Delaware Valley.
