Hamburg woman, 72, dies after Route 61 crash in Berks

A 72-year-old Hamburg woman died as a result of a one-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Route 61 in Perry Township, state police said Tuesday.

Cheryl L. Davis was pronounced dead by a physician upon arrival at Reading Hospital following the 3:42 p.m. crash, troopers said.

According to investigators:

Davis was northbound in the right lane of Route 61 about a half-mile north of Birch Hill Road when she lost control of the SUV on the wet surface. The vehicle went into the left lane and David oversteered in an attempt to return to her lane, causing the SUV to spin and go off the right side of the road.

The SUV traveled backward up an embankment and rolled several times before coming to rest against the median wall.

Davis, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The northbound lanes of Route 61 were closed for about two hours while police investigated.
