Hamburg’s Mia Gassert has advanced to the semifinals of the District 3 Class 2A singles tournament with a pair of wins Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.
Gassert, the third seed, defeated Maggie Auman of Lancaster Country Day 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and Brianna Serruto of Kennard-Dale 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
She was the only Berks player to advance to the semis in Class 2A or Class 3A.
Gassert will face second-seeded Madeline Gerz Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hershey Racquet Club. The final will be later Saturday.
Also in Class 2A, Kutztown’s Sierra Smart and Berks Catholic’s Abby Schnatz won first-round matches. Smart defeated Sarah Steckbeck of Lancaster Mennonite 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-1 before losing to top-seeded Anna Millen of Lancaster Catholic 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
Schnatz defeated El Yale of Camp Hill 6-2, 6-3 before losing to Gerz 7-5, 6-2.
Wyomissing’s Elise Wang lost to Millen 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.
In Class 3A, Reading High’s Ashley Retana and Exeter’s Anya Whitman lost in the first round.
Retana fell to third-seeded Anya Rosenbach of New Oxford 6-0, 6-0, and Whitman lost to Lexi Lakatosh of Red Lion 6-1, 6-0.
