Billy Harrison began to have doubts in the spring whether he wanted to continue as Conrad Weiser boys basketball coach.
He gave himself several months to see if those feelings would disappear. They didn’t.
The 34-year-old Harrison has resigned as coach after five seasons. He will continue as Weiser’s athletic director.
“I just didn’t feel the passion that I used to feel for coaching,” he said. “I wasn’t going to go into something halfway. It was just time. Normally I’m ready to go this time of the year. I wasn’t feeling it this year, so I knew.”
Harrison, a Berks Christian graduate, guided the Scouts to a 65-49 record, including 34-17 in league play. During his tenure, Weiser made the Berks Conference playoffs three times (2018, ’19, ’21) and the District 3 playoffs twice (2018, ’21).
Last season, the Scouts beat Wyomissing in the Berks playoffs before falling to PIAA Class 6A champion Reading High in the semis. Harrison’s last game was a 50-45 loss to Manheim Central in a District 3 Class 5A opener.
Harrison and his wife, Kristi, have a 2-year-old daughter.
“I have a growing family, he said. “Being a head coach is a big time commitment. I’ve enjoyed it. Basketball was my No. 1 for so many years and it’s just not anymore. I’m OK with that. That’s how I knew.”
Harrison played basketball at Berks Christian and Lancaster Bible and comes from a family with a background in that sport.
“I was content with the five years I put in here,” he said. “I feel like the program is in a good spot. I felt like a good foundation was laid. That put me at ease.”
