While much of the 2024 Kutztown Fair “Harvesting Happiness” Aug. 5 to 10 saw a lot of wet weather and at times hurricane-like conditions closing rides, the final day proved to be the best for sun and fun.
Families, friends and neighbors lined up early at the gates for the 2 p.m. opening for Children’s Day. Many families came out for the children’s offerings, including free popcorn and sno-cones, free face painting, corn excavating by Vroman, the Fun on the Farm Tent and the kids raffle.
The warm, sunny weather proved to be the perfect day for rides provided by Houghton Enterprises, Inc. There was something for everyone from the carousel to the Avengers spinning ride for the more adventurous.
The Flying Wallendas Family Circus, an eighth-generation family circus known for its tightrope acts, performed in the midway. The show featured JP the Clown, juggling acts, acts by the youngest members of the Wallendas, and, of course, death-defying tightrope skills.
The youngest performer was only 2 and showed off her tumbling skills with her mom. The patriarch of the family, who has been performing for 55 years, showed the importance of exercise by riding a bicycle across the tightrope.
All week, bands filled the fairgrounds with music. On the final day, The Large Flowerheads took the audience on a groovy 1960s and ’70s musical experience with hits from iconic artists like The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Tom Jones.
Throughout the week there were agriculture events in the show ring, animal displays, competitions and judging. And let’s not forget about the judged exhibits on display in the Quilt Barn all week and live music every day.
No matter the weather permanent food stands remained open all week, to name a few: Heart & Hearth BBQ, Kutztown Grange #1836, Kutztown Lions Club, Kutztown Area School Music Association, Flowering Onion, Kutztown Optimist Club, Tony’s Steaks, Vinces, and Virginville Grange #1832.
