A crowd gathered on South Chestnut Street for the annual New Year’s Bear Drop hosted by the Boyertown Area Historical Society on New Year’s Eve.
More than 200 people gathered behind the Boyertown Area Historical Society building to count down and watch Boyertown Fire and Rescue drop a bear at 6 p.m. (midnight in Germany).
The free event included cookies and hot chocolate and a performance by Phoebe the Folk Singer – Phoebe Kelleher – on guitar.
Attendees could also make care packages for veterans. Boyertown Area Historical Society’s care packages for veterans included Spam, Top Ramen Chicken, Rice Krispies Treats, candy, cookies, crackers, and grooming items like combs and tissues along with a holiday greeting card, all in a decorated gift bag.
The New Year’s countdown also included wishes for 2024.
For a second year, children were encouraged to write their 2024 New Year wishes on star ornaments to be hung on the Boyertown Area Historical Society’s tree. Some wishes for 2024 included to be Santa Claus, to be kind, to have their elf stay all year long, to get some tools, for the Eagles to win, and to be good at snowboarding. Last year’s wish ornaments are now on display in a Historical Society case.
John Yoast from WBYN FM 107.5 also spoke to attendees, recording their New Year’s wishes that he will be sharing on his morning show weekdays from 5 to 8 a.m. throughout the month of January. This is the first time 2024 wishes were recorded by Yoast for WBYN FM 107.5.
The highlight of the event was a countdown to the New Year’s Bear Drop.
The Boyertown Fire and Rescue hoisted the New Year’s Bear. At 6 p.m. (midnight in Germany) the crowd counted down from 30 and the bear dropped about one foot a second.
