ELVERSON – Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site invites you to join in a magical evening of storytelling by lantern light on Saturday, October 18. The park will serve as the backdrop to spooky stories and chilling tales that would have been familiar to Hopewell residents nearly 200 years ago. Some of the content included in the program may be scary for young children.
First outdoor guided tour begins at 5:30pm with the last tour occurring at 7:30pm. Tours will last just over 30 minutes. Participants can expect to travel across gravel and grassy terrain, including uphill and downhill slopes. Wear sturdy shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring a flashlight. Water and restroom facilities are available before and after the program at the park Visitor Center. This program may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.
Due to limited program capacity, registration is required. Registration opens on Friday, October 3. To request registration for a program, email hofu_superintendent@nps.gov. Please include your preferred program times (first and second choices), your name, and the number of people in your party. Registration is limited to groups of 8 or fewer. We will respond to your email to confirm your registration and program time. Timeslots are available on a first come, first served basis.
Hopewell Furnace was established as a National Historic Site on August 3, 1938 and preserves the late 18th and early 19th century setting of an iron-making community, including the charcoal-fueled furnace, and its natural and cultural resources. This community illustrates the essential role of industrialization in the growth of the early United States. The furnace was established in 1771 by Ironmaster Mark Bird and operated as a furnace for the next 112 years.
The park’s facilities are open Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hopewell Furnace is located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, PA 19520 about five miles south of Birdsboro, PA, off Route 345. Admission to the park is free. For more information, call 610-582-8773 or visit the park’s web site at www.nps.gov/hofu.
