House in southern Schuylkill destroyed by fire

A home just off Route 183 in southern Schuylkill County was destroyed by a blaze that broke out Sunday and a drew half-dozen crews over the mountain from northwestern Berks County.

The initial crews were called about 10:30 a.m. to 44 Blue Mountain Heights, 2 miles south of Summit Station in Wayne Township.

There were reports that fire trucks were having difficulty getting to the fire due to icy road conditions. The home was fully aflame by the time they got water on the fire.

There were no reports of injuries.

Assisting crews from Summit Station Fire Company and the Schuylkill Haven companies were Berks crews from Bernville, Shartlesville, Strausstown, Mount Aetna, Rehrersburg and Bethel fire companies.

Several Schuylkill Haven-area businesses supplied firefighters with flood and water during the extended operation.

By the time crews got the fire out, the home was a charred shell.

A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause.
