Icy conditions causing accidents on Interstate 78, other area roads

Freezing rain and sleet is entering the area this morning and causing problems on area roads.

There have been reports of accidents on Interstate 78, including an overturned tractor-trailer on the eastbound side in Greenwich Township. Emergency crews are reporting that I-78 in northern Berks is extremely slick due to icy conditions.

Similar problems were reported on other roads in the area, including Route 143 near the interstate. Fire police were called to assist in controlling traffic in Hamburg due to the impact of the accident on local roads.

An accident was reported on Mineral Spring Road near the Lindbergh Viaduct in Reading. Crews on the scene reported icy conditions on the bridge.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and to use caution if they must travel. It has temporarily reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on in Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties; Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County; Interstate 80 in Monroe and Carbon counties; and Interstate 380 in Monroe.
