Impending freezing weather, subzero wind chills trigger weather advisories for Berks

The National Weather Service this morning issued a winter weather advisory for Berks County through early this evening.

Additionally, the service issued a wind-chill advisory from 3 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Saturday, warning that wind chills of 25 below zero are expected.

Berks County officials said this morning that county facilities will close at noon today.

County employees who work in departments that operate around the clock are advised to follow the inclement weather policy.

The weather service advisory says a strong cold front moving west to east across the area this morning will bring rain showers before changing to a quick burst of snow with rapidly dropping temperatures.

Up to 1 1/2 inches of snow accumulation is expected, resulting in icy conditions and a quick reduction in visibility.

West winds will also gust up to 55 mph, with wind chills as low as 25 below zero expected.

The advisory area also includes Lehigh County and the Pocono region.
