Jacob Pritchard’s overtime goal lifts Reading Royals over Newfoundland Growlers

Jacob Pritchard scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Royals a 4-3 victory over the Growlers at Mary Brown’s Center in Newfoundland on Friday night. The goal, assisted by Dominic Cormier, gave Reading its second win of the three-game series.

Frank DiChiara opened the scoring in the first period for the Royals off an assist by Pritchard. The Growlers quickly responded with a goal by Riley McCourt to tie it.

Jeremy McKenna gave Newfoundland the 2-1 lead early in the second. Jackson Cressey tied it for Reading with just under five minutes left in the period.

The Growlers took the lead again in the third period when a delay of game penalty on Pritchard led to a Noel Hoefenmayer power-play goal.

Fresh off a penalty kill with 4:15 left, Cormier scored for the second time in as many games to tie it at 3-3 and force overtime. He was assisted by Pritchard.

Hayden Hawkey had 26 saves for Reading and Evan Cormier had 24 for Newfoundland.

The Royals, with 46 points, hold a nine-point lead over Newfoundland for first place in the North Division, but the Growlers have played four less games. Reading has won 4-of-7 games against Newfoundland this season.

The Royals complete the three-game road series against the Growlers Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
