John O’Hara event coming up next week at Schuylkill Country Club

The deadline to reserve a seat for an “Evening with John O’Hara” is approaching.

The Schuylkill Country Club Book Club event will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, at the country club in Orwigsburg. The public is invited.

The cost is $35 per person for the dinner. There will be a cash bar. Reservations are required, please call 570-366-0622 by Sept. 16.

O’Hara, a Pottsville native, was a renowned author. His works were often met with controversy as his stories of “Gibbsville” hit home.

In more than 35 years he produced 31 books, novels and short stories along with magazine articles. The local community was often his setting. Several of his books were made into movies, including “Ten North Frederick,” “Butterfield 8,” “From the Terrace,” “A Rage to Live” and “Pal Joey.”

O’Hara was a member of the SCC. As part of the club’s 2021 Centennial Year Celebration, the book club has chosen to recognize one of its most famous members.

Starting at 6 p.m., the evening will be a walk down memory lane as guests enjoy jazz music, specialty cocktails, a short program with audience interaction and a brief discussion of O’Hara’s “Appointment in Samarra.”
