Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. recently made a contribution to help Power Packs Project in its efforts to assist food insecure households in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
The bank donated $10,000 to Power Packs, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that provides nutritious meals over weekend when school breakfast and lunch programs are unavailable to students.
The program each week provides a recipe and the ingredients to make the meal in addition to staples like peanut butter and cereal, according to the Power Packs Project website. The program also provides food preparation skills to help families learn to stretch their food dollars.
“This generous donation from JBT will aid Power Packs’ efforts to provide weekly healthy food and education to the record numbers of food insecure families coming to Power Packs who need help putting food on their tables, and provide them with hope for a brighter future ahead,” Brad Peterson, Power Packs Project executive director, said in a statement.
The Power Packs Project is recognized as an Educational Improvement Organization, and is in 13 school districts in Lancaster County and three school districts in Lebanon County. According to the organization, it has more than 500 volunteers and serves more than 1,600 families in the two counties.
“The Power Packs Project is meeting a vital need in a number of communities we serve,” Troy A. Peters, JBT president & CEO, said in a statement. “They combine educational efforts with ingredients and recipes to help families make sure their children return to school fed and ready to learn. We’re happy to be able to support the work they do.”
In 2016, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that nearly 13 million children in the country were living in food-insecure households, without consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life, according to a release.
Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. operates 12 branch locations, including one in Berks County at 318 E. Penn Ave. in Heidelberg Township, just outside of Robesonia. The Berks location opened in March 2020.
