Keon Taylor scores 28 as Alvernia men defeat Messiah in college basketball

Keon Taylor scored 28 points as the Alvernia men overcame a second-half deficit to beat Messiah 93-75 in a MAC Commonwealth basketball game Saturday at Jack McCloskey Court.

Taylor also had seven rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots for the Golden Wolves (10-4, 16-5), who won their ninth straight by outscoring the Falcons 40-19 in the final 14:53.

Avery Walker scored 21 points for Alvernia. Malik Green had 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists, Jakob Kelly had 12 points and six rebounds and Muhlenberg High grad Jacob Stoudt had 12 points.

Tyler Penley led Messiah with 26 points and seven rebounds.

Albright 72, Lebanon Valley: At Bollman Center, Jordan Guerrero tied a season high with 17 points as the Lions (6-8 MAC Commonwealth, 10-12) rallied from an 11-point hole in the second half to beat the Flying Dutchmen (3-12, 6-16).

With the score 61-61 and 2:07 to go, Guerrero fed Robert Mangum for a layup that sparked a game-changing 9-0 run.

Sidney Brown had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Albright and freshman Eric Chamberlain had 11 points and five steals.

Collin Jones scored a game-high 28 points for Lebanon Valley. Berks Catholic grad Luis Garcia had 10 points, four assists, four rebounds and one steal and Wilson grad Evin Timochenko had seven points and 15 rebounds.

Shepherd 68, Kutztown 60: At Shepherdstown, W.Va., Kyle Daggett scored 20 points and Cam Stephens had 19 as the Rams (6-10 PSAC East, 10-12) damaged the playoff hopes of the Golden Bears (4-14, 7-17).

Reading High grad Wesley Butler had 18 points and four steals for Kutztown, Evan-Eric Longino had 15 points and Channick Nkoma had seven rebounds.

Wells 91, Penn State Berks 77: At Beaver Community Center, Ransel Rodriguez scored 37 points to lead the Express (10-5 United East, 16-8) past the Nittany Lions (0-13, 0-19).

Monty Farmer had 26 points for Penn State Berks, Wilson grad Hassan Koroma had 20 and Ladan Graves 12.

Women

Kutztown 68, Shepherd 59: At Shepherdstown, W.Va., Rylee Derr scored 17 points and Abbey Hearn had 16 as the Golden Wolves (13-3, 20-5) beat the Rams (12-5, 18-5) in a PSAC East game.

It’s the first time Kutztown has won 20 games since the 2008-09 season. The school record of 21 was set in 1999-2000.

The Golden Bears hit 8-of-10 shots in the first quarter to go up 22-12. KU led by as many as 21 in the third quarter, before Shepherd got within five 46-41. That was as close as the Rams would get.

Sydney Clayton led Shepherd with 14 points.

Lebanon Valley 55, Albright 47 (OT): At Bollman Center, the Lions (7-7, 12-8) were outscored 13-5 in overtime in a MAC Commonwealth loss to the Flying Dutchmen (6-9, 11-13).

Albright rallied from seven points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Berks Catholic grad Abby Gaffney hit two free throws for the Lions with 2:56 left to tie it at 42-42. Neither team could score during the rest of regulation.

Lebanon Valley scored the first four points of overtime. Albright got within 46-44, but the Flying Dutchmen went on an 8-1 run to clinch it.

Gabby Boggs finished with 18 points for the Lions. Amina Rauf had 11 and Gaffney 10. Brady Wassel had 12 rebounds.

Cristina Fernandez led Lebanon Valley with 17 points.

Messiah 60, Alvernia 58: At Jack McCloskey Court, Madison Eich scored a layup with two seconds left to lift the first-place Falcons (13-1, 19-2) over the Golden Wolves (3-11, 10-12) in a MAC Commonwealth game.

Alvernia, which trailed by 13 in the second quarter, took a 54-47 lead with 4:42 left before it was outscored 13-4 the rest of the way.

Kayla Williams and Tyra Robinson each scored 14 points for Alvernia.

Reese Harden scored 16 and Leah Springer had 15 for Messiah.

Wells 62, Penn State Berks 52: At Beaver Community Center, Abby Ackley scored 18 points, Sam Hagenbush had 17 and Kayla Zelonka 21 for the Nittany Lions (0-13, 0-20) in the United East loss to the Express (2-13, 2-20).
