Kutztown University lost to Gannon 55-47 in the second game of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women’s basketball semifinal doubleheader Saturday at Keystone Arena, after Berks Catholic grad Dejah Terrel helped California (Pa.) defeat Shepherd 78-49 in the first game.
The Golden Knights (23-6) and the Vulcans (24-4) will play for the title today at Kutztown at 3 p.m.
The Golden Bears (26-6), the top seed from the PSAC East, never led in the loss to the West No. 2 seed.
Gannon scored the game’s first six points and led by as many as 12 in the first half before going to halftime with a 34-24 lead.
Kutztown rallied to twice tie it, the final time at 40-40 with 7:33 left. The Golden Bears still were down just 43-42 after Naia Pulliam made a pair of foul shots with 6:20 left, but the Golden Knights scored the next six points to go up 49-42 with 1:38 left.
Pulliam hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 49-47 with 52 seconds left, but Gannon went 6-for-6 from the line the rest of the way.
The Golden Bears shot 2-for-12 from the field in the fourth quarter.
Casey Remolde led KU with 15 points. Pulliam had 11 and Rylee Derr 10.
Samantha Pirosko had 16 points for Gannon. Emma Wright had 15 points and eight rebounds.
In the first game, Terrell, a junior forward the PSAC West Athlete and Defensive Player of the Year, had 11 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals before fouling out.
Cal, the top seed from the West, took control with a 16-2 run in the second quarter that turned a 18-14 deficit into a 30-20 lead. It led 37-29 at halftime.
The Vulcans then scored the first six points of the second half to take a 43-29 lead on the way to its 10th straight win.
Ciaira Lloyd led California with 25 points, and Shauna Harrison had 15.
Sydney Clayton had 18 points to lead Shepherd (24-7), the third-place team from the East. Marley McLaughlin and Abby Beeman each had 14 points.
