Late winter storm underway in Berks, region

A late winter storm arrived in Berks County Saturday morning and is causing dangerous road conditions.

The precipitation started as rain but turned to snow as temperatures dropped. There was heavy snow falling by mid-morning in the Reading area.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to remain in effect until 7 p.m. and is predicting 5 to 7 inches of accumulation in the region, accompanied by high winds and frigid conditions. Winds are expected to gust as high as 50 mph.

A period of blizzard-like conditions is likely in the late morning and early afternoon due to high winds combined with heavy snow.

Travel is hazardous, with limited visibility and snow and ice starting to accumulate on area roads. Some accidents have been reported.

PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties; Route 422 in Berks County; Route 222 in Berks and Lehigh counties; and the length of Interstate 176;
