A Lehigh County man suffered a medical emergency and died Tuesday after his vehicle crashed into two tractor-trailers parked along the side of Interstate 78 in northwest Berks County, officials said Wednesday.
John M. Furbur, 62, of Catasauqua was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Jason Kanter following the crash about 12:45 p.m. along the westbound interstate In Upper Tulpehocken Township.
Furbur died of multiple injuries and his death was ruled accidental by the coroner’s office.
According to troopers from the Hamburg station:
Furbur was westbound between the Route 61 and Route 183 interchanges when he suffered a medical emergency and his SUV veered onto the shoulder and the extended paved surface at mile marker 21.3 where commercial truck drivers often park to rest or if they’ve reached their limit for hours logged behind the wheel.
The SUV struck two trucks parked on the widened surface, then continued through the tree line before coming to rest.
First responders found Furbur dead in the SUV and his passenger, Joan Caton, 64, of Allentown, injured. She suffered unspecified injuries and was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.
