Bravo to Yoda the Border Patrol K-9 for finally taking down escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante, a Brazilian who had entered the country illegally. After his conviction he was sent to Chester County Prison to await being sent to state prison. While moving freely in the prison population, he heard of the escape of another inmate there in May. The clever and agile Cavalcante used the same technique at the same location to make his own escape in August. For some reason the county had failed to adequately block the escape route.
Steps should have been taken to put Cavalcante, who was wanted for a second murder in Brazil, into a more secure prison or to be confined to his cell.
Schools and neighborhoods in the area were terrorized for two weeks. West Chester University locked down one day and Longwood Gardens was closed for several days while the escapee managed to get through several “secure” perimeters to steal a truck, even when bloodhounds were used. Homes and businesses were vandalized, and families traumatized.
There was great relief when it was finally over, but who is accountable for tens of thousands of dollars squandered on the manhunt that could have been avoided or shortened with critical thinking by authorities?
