Letter: America should heed suffering in Ukraine

It snowed in Ukraine last night. It covered the mass graves and the burned-out houses. No one saw the children crying and huddled in the darkness. The snow blows through the broken windows of the hospital on the hill. Broken tanks rust away, and their guns are silent. A mother watches as her baby cries on a cellar floor. One blanket keeps them both warm, and there’s a bar across the door to keep out the looters. Tomorrow, another pack of drones will fly into a Ukrainian city. Some will be shot down, but there are not enough shells to get them all. She prays that the next drone will miss them.

Her husband waits for the next Russian soldier to cross into no man’s land. He has eaten only once today and hopes to find another meal or something warm to drink before nightfall. His feet are cold, and his eyes are heavy, but there is no shelter to keep him warm or let him rest for a few hours.

In America, the House of Representatives will try again to find a way to impeach the president for being legally elected.
