Letter: Berks veterans receive great community support [updated]

This letter has been updated to correct the name of the church that contributed gifts at the event.

Editor:

An estimated 100 veterans were honored and treated to a wonderful holiday meal at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading. The buffet and dessert bar were shared by veterans spanning decades of military service.

Our table had Vietnam and Gulf War soldiers. There were no “war stories” but a shared bond whatever our specialties. One Marine wore a black leather jacket (a present, he said) tastefully proclaiming his connection with the Marines. I told him it would almost be cool enough to encourage a signup. I learned he was one of the founders of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in City Park.

Our generous sponsors were Penske Truck Leasing and the DoubleTree. They invited Doug and Liz Graybill of Veterans Making a Difference. The Graybills invited similar organizations to the event as well as single veterans they know.

Each former service member received a gift from GT Church and Veterans Making a Difference. Just last year, I learned a little about the organizations serving Berks County veterans and the sponsors that make this all possible. At one event this month, 52 business and individual sponsors made it possible for us. Most of them have veteran employees and seek vets to employ.

The more vets I meet and the more learned about the support from our community to veterans, the more I appreciate.
