In highfalutin language, theatrically speaking, it appears that we’re witnessing the gradual demise of former President Donald Trump’s suzerainty of the Republican Party and the denouement of a latter-day reenactment of a drama akin to Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Richard III.” In that play’s final scene, the protagonist frantically gasps moments before being slain: “I have set my life upon a cast, and I will stand the hazard of the die. A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!”
Trump, by his intractable contempt for and arrogant defiance of the rule of law and his Stygian demand for unwavering fealty from his cultish acolytes, has become the Tommaso Salvini of the American political stage.
