Runaway horse from Lancaster County causes a traffic backup in western Berks

A man on horseback chased his runaway horse for about 4 miles on Fritztown Road from the Reinholds area in Lancaster County before catching up to the stallion on the other side of South Mountain in Berks County, police said Wednesday

South Heidelberg Township police were dispatched at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday to the 1000 block of Fritztown Road. A resident told the dispatcher that a horse was loose and running down the road causing a traffic backup.

Officer Jeremiah Lanza responded and saw a horse running down the middle of Fritztown Road through the intersection at Wernersville Road.

As he pulled onto Fritztown from Wernersville Road, Lanza saw a man on horseback following the horse. The rider caught up with the horse at Kretiz Oval Track Part Inc., 785 Fritztown Road, and grabbed ahold of the animal.

The man was identified as Raymond Medina of Black Horse Road in East Cocalico Township. It wasn’t clear how the horse escaped.

Police took his information and closed out the incident.

Police Chief Leon Grim said the incident gave new meaning to the “western” Berks area.
