Letter: False equivalency at work in comments regarding Hamas

Editor:

In response to “Why don’t more protest Hamas attack on Israel?” (Reading Eagle, Oct. 19), I am an American citizen. This means that a not insignificant percentage of my tax dollars are spent on recruiting, training, arming and equipping police officers. As such, I expect a high degree of professionalism and competence from them, and when they fall short I’m going to protest. At the very minimum, I don’t think police officers should straight up murder somebody in their custody.

By the same token, I am neither Jewish nor Israeli. I’m also not a Palestinian, a Muslim, a Semite, a Persian, or an Arab. I have absolutely no connection to the Middle East culturally, religiously or ethnically, and I really don’t want to get involved over there.

While I understand that Hamas has committed some truly awful acts of terrorism over the years, the Israelis to put it bluntly are not always the guys in the white hats either. Is it not an act of state terrorism when an Israeli soldier kills a Palestinian child as has happened many times? The Palestinians do in fact have many legitimate grievances that often go unheard.
