“Francona steps away as Cleveland’s winningest manager” (Reading Eagle, Oct. 4) about surefire Hall of Fame manager Terry Francona brought back memories of the Reading Indians and Phillies and baseball legends like Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Scott Rolen, Ryne Sandberg, Vladimir Guererro and Deion Sanders to name a few who played at Reading’s baseball stadium. It was thrilling to see these icons as youngsters hoping to make the bigs.
Terry’s dad, Tito, was Reading’s right fielder in the mid-1950s. We thought he was a surefire big league star. Terry, then a boy, sat behind home plate with his strikingly beautiful mom for every game rooting for his dad. Little did anyone think that he rather than his dad would become a baseball legend.
As they say, that’s baseball.
