Letter: Great candidates willing to accept election results

Editor:

I would like to remind people that in our upcoming midterm election, and in all future elections, there will be winners and losers. Winning candidates receive more votes than losing candidates, sometimes by very small margins. It’s basic math.

If a candidate loses it does not mean the election was fraudulent; it means fewer votes were received than by an opponent. All the wasting of taxpayer resources in the world, such as conducting exhaustive recounts and endless court proceedings, will not change this result.

Great candidates accept this challenge and want to earn constituents’ votes by demonstrating an ability to lead and by encouraging, not discouraging, citizens to vote. Bemoaning a lost election and crying foul when one doesn’t like the result is something my parents called being a sore loser, and they taught me not to be one.

May we all consider the values we want our leaders to espouse when we vote on Nov. 8.
