Letter: Information from Hamas should not be trusted

Editor:

On Feb 17, you ran a front-page story on alleged deaths in a Gaza hospital (“Officials: Oxygen runs out; 5 die”). This unverified story was attributed to “health officials,” which in Gaza means someone who is a member of or subservient to Hamas.

The U.S. designated Hamas a terrorist organization in 1997. Everyone knows that Hamas is to blame for the suffering in Gaza. We all know that Hamas rules Gaza with an iron fist. Their terrorists roasted a baby to death in his family’s oven on Oct 7, according to an Israeli first responder. Yet The Associated Press accepts a story from Hamas officials about the suffering of people in Gaza. Has the AP lost its mind? Or its moral compass?

Rather than just forwarding propaganda supplied by Hamas, how about a story explaining why Egypt and other Muslim nations in the Middle East won’t take any Palestinian refugees? How about a story on how Hamas stole millions of dollars in aid, meant to help the people of Gaza, and used it to build tunnels for terrorist activities and supplies? That would be educational for many people, but it would require real journalism instead of using terrorists as a source.
