Letter: Nation facing serious political challenges

Editor:

Our democracy is in peril. We have an inclusive, diverse and progressive Democratic Party that is trying to achieve a policy consensus on extraordinarily complex issues. We also have a wealthy, male-dominated, authoritarian Republican Party that has coalesced around former President Donald Trump’s Big Lie, conspiracies, white supremacy and voter suppression. (75% of Republicans still believe Trump won in 2020.)

Democrats are trying to propose rational policies (based on actual analyses of facts) to invest in the country’s people, infrastructure and climate change mitigation. Republicans are doing everything possible to undermine President Joe Biden with propaganda, obstructionism and lies. The GOP thrives because the Electoral College, the Senate and the Supreme Court all tilt in its favor.

In the past year child poverty has been cut substantially. We’ve added hundreds of thousands of jobs per month, and we finally have an infrastructure bill. We also still have a democracy. If Trump would have won reelection, or if the Capitol insurrection would have succeeded, we could be living in an autocracy.

Americans are deeply concerned about the pandemic and inflation. Monopolies are padding their profits, while families are struggling with omicron. Biden must lean on corporations to temper rising prices and order sensible testing, vaccine and mask mandates. He must also push for policies that ease economic burdens on working families.
