Letter: Nation must abandon self-destructive trends

Editor:

Social Security was never a good idea in the first place (“Aging population poses danger to Social Security,” Reading Eagle, Sept. 10). It presumes that there would always be enough workers to fund benefits for those who are retired, which has proved wrong. And as an involuntary program, it forces workers to depend on the government, undercutting the important American virtue of self-reliance; it should be individual’s responsibility to provide for their own future rather than relying on the state. Even then, it makes more sense to invest some of what you’ve earned, getting a better rate of return than you could ever get from Uncle Sam.

There are self-destructive social trends that affect the situation as well. For example, children are seen as a burden rather than a blessing from the Lord; kids are considered “expensive,” taking away from the toys their parents could otherwise have. And what about those whose lives have been snuffed out by abortion? If not for the years between Roe v. Wade and its reversal, 65 million babies could have grown up and become a part of the workforce. On top of that, without surrogate help, homosexual couples cannot reproduce.

Societal experimentation has left us bankrupt. Instead, we should be encouraging young people to have children, valuing human life, decreasing the need for government by reducing taxes and trusting Americans to fund their own future.
