Letter: New House speaker off to promising start

Editor:

This has been a year of challenges for all of us. We are kept informed about the many problems facing our country. At times it is difficult to learn about them without getting upset. However, just as we need to deal with our personal problems, we need to deal with problems on a larger scale and hope with God’s guidance to deal with them as well.

I’ve dealt with health problems, and as a conservative Republican I have opinions on other matters as well.

Oct. 25 looms as a date to remember for me and hopefully for other Americans as well. On that date U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected speaker of the House. He got all 220 votes cast by GOP members. That is a real feat.

Before an election not too long ago I wrote that we had no cash and hope. Shortly after that we had no Johnny Cash and no Bob Hope. Speaker Johnson talked about “In God We Trust,” words very familiar to the U.S. House. He also talked about needing more hope and teamwork.

Finally, he talked about President Ronald Reagan, a great American leader who did so much but could find time to mail a letter to my parents when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1981.

My hopes and prayers are with Johnson as he serves all of us as speaker of the people’s house in Washington. May God bless the USA.
