Many of the states that joined the Confederate insurrection 160 years ago are still trying to undermine the federal government. In 1933 conservatives argued that the new Social Security Act placed the United States on the road to socialism. Today Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., has proposed a plan that would sunset Social Security and Medicare requiring new legislation every five years.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., called for “a national divorce” dividing the nation into red and blue states.
For 10 months Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., blocked confirmation of hundreds of military promotions. Former Rep. Liz Cheney speculated Tuberville was doing so in case Donald Trump wins in 2024. Leaving top military positions open would allow Trump’s call for unchecked powers to use the military as a domestic police force right away. Trump has insinuated that Gen. Mark Milley, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, deserves to be put to death for treason.
Many MAGA Republicans say that if Trump is convicted, a civil war will begin. When a revolution or war starts, no one has control of where it goes — look at Ukraine and Gaza.
Do you agree with what these Republicans are saying and doing? If you do, then the GOP is the party for you.
Know that how you vote will shape the kind of country we will have.
