Letter: Push to ban TikTok won’t address real tech issues

Editor:

The push by Washington to ban TikTok takes us in the wrong direction. While there are valid concerns, the approach being considered raises significant issues far beyond the app itself. This strategy fails to address the underlying problems with tech companies and threatens to set a dangerous precedent for governmental intervention in the tech sector, where freedom and innovation should prevail. Will banning TikTok protect Americans’ data privacy and security, or will these challenges simply shift to other platforms, potentially less scrutinized and regulated? We must consider whether the proposed solution is a stopgap, addressing symptoms rather than the root cause.

As an active Republican, I champion individual freedoms, economic prosperity and minimal government intervention. A more measured and comprehensive approach to regulating tech companies — safeguarding privacy and data without compromising freedom and innovation — better aligns with our values.

Targeting TikTok fails to tackle the problems we face with some tech companies. Instead, it sets a dangerous precedent, suggesting the government can selectively penalize companies based on their country of origin or assumed political affiliations, infringing on free enterprise and speech.

It seems more driven by politics and fear than by a desire to solve real issues. We need clear, universally applicable rules that all tech companies must follow to protect our privacy and ensure fair treatment of users, not targeting one company.

We should demand true solutions that address the broader issues in tech, protect our freedoms and ensure the internet remains a fair and safe place for all.
