Letter: Reading fortunate to keep Fightin Phils

Editor:

Berks County is fortunate to retain the Reading Fightin Phils, its Class AA minor league baseball club. Many other cities have not been as fortunate.

As a high school and American Legion player, I recall well the Boston Red Sox acquisition of the Reading franchise location. The Sox affiliate spent about two years in Reading and then left when a franchise location became available closer to home, enabling the Philadelphia Phillies to obtain the Reading Eastern League franchise site.

I also recall construction of what is now known as FirstEnergy Stadium and, especially it being made available for some high school baseball and American Legion games, including Berks County high school championship games.

Thank you to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Reading Fightin Phils, Berks County and American Legion commissioners and city leaders.
