Gov. Josh Shapiro should be praised for wanting to address the rising cost of higher education at Pennsylvania’s state universities. However, simply increasing taxpayer funding for these schools is not the solution. Many of the degrees offered at taxpayer-subsidized prices lead to careers with little job growth and a surplus of qualified graduates, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook.
If the governor truly wants to make higher education more affordable, he should reduce the number of publicly funded degrees to those aligned with critical workforce shortages across the state.
