Editor:
I would like to share a story not about partisan politics and hostility but one of unexpected kindness. I recently visited my elderly father, who is ailing in both mind and body.
On my way home, I stopped at the Shillington Dollar Tree and decided that I would offer to pay for someone’s purchase because, if I couldn’t help my dad in his current situation, I would at least like to do something nice for a stranger. The customer behind me had birthday balloons and cards, and I asked if I could pay in honor of the celebration. She politely declined, and as I explained my situation I started to tear up.
As her order was being scanned, she added something to it and then gave it to me because she could see my heartbreak. She was a young Black woman, beautiful inside and out. I am a middle-aged white woman. If that doesn’t shut up the cynics and show that this country isn’t totally doomed, I don’t know what will.
Thank you to that wonderful lady. Whoever thought a sparkly pen with a rose at the top would be among my most cherished possessions?
