Kudos to Jane Beck for “We need a different way to fund the public schools” (Reading Eagle, July 24). I’ve always said: “My heart is in the public schools. So are my kids.”
In our competitive commercial society too many lose the point of learning in the first place. It isn’t only a place to find a way to get a job. It’s alarming that more and more schools are dropping English as a major.
Quarreling over taxes for schools is a no-brainer. We should particularly remember, as the July 24 letter noted, that in 1876 the Republican Party platform called the public school system the bulwark of the American republic.
Plain old penmanship is being dropped at schools. Who writes anymore? It’s all texting. How will our students ever be able to read the Constitution and other documents of importance to our development?
