Letter: Topton Museum has plenty to celebrate

Editor:

In 2022 we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Topton Museum at 44 W. Keller St. A great deal has been accomplished, but much more needs to be done. Each year I’ve given an Appreciation Award to a group and an individual who has supported the museum. A list of recipients is posted at the museum.

Our museum has been featured in WFMZ-TV’s “One Tank Trip” segment and in many Reading Eagle articles on local history. A Red Hat group from the Macungie area has visited and received red carnations from Trexler Florist, which recently closed after serving the area since 1930. I’ve had correspondence from state Sen. Judy Schwank, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and Lara Trump.

One 2018 letter stands out. A 90-year-old man from Stockton, Calif., sent me four postcards he had purchased for $12. They dealt with the Topton Lutheran Home orphanage. He thought preserving our heritage was very important. So he asked for $15 and a little more for postage. He told me he had a bet with his wife and would take her out to dine if he got money back from me. He said he was only interested in a “redistribution of happiness and our world really needs it.” I mailed him a check for $20.
