Letter: Vice president wrong to overlook the unborn

Editor:

Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Reading Area Community College (“Vice presidential visit,” Reading Eagle, Sept. 19) was part of her “Fight for Our Freedoms” college tour, but evidently not everyone is included in that fight.

Even though she spoke of “a vision that is about understanding everyone should be free to live their best life,” she left out a significant group of people, the unborn.

In particular, she accused the U.S. Supreme Court of taking away a constitutional right from the women of America, which, while she did not mention the word, is an obvious reference to abortion.

But I would challenge her to cite one line from the Constitution that grants that freedom.
I would also point to our nation’s founding document, the Declaration of Independence, which insists that all men (i.e., people, including the unborn) have “certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

If anything, the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision took away the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for those in the womb.

As a result, we as a society have been robbed of the contributions of 65 million Americans since then — human beings who would have been given the chance to live and grow up to be doctors, researchers, educators, artists and everyday workers.

The Supreme Court was wrong in 1973, as it has been at times in the past. Fortunately, in 2022, it reversed itself and made the right decision.
