It’s time to get dressed in your finest ghost wear and hang out with some animals.
The annual Boo at the Zoo at both the Philadelphia and Elmwood Park zoos will be happening over the next few weeks.
This year’s lineup at the Philadelphia Zoo is filled with a new big new tricks, treats and surprises for its largest year ever. The fan-favorite event brings in tens of thousands of guests each year dressed in amazing costumes and ready to go on a trick-or-treat safari.
Boo at the Zoo will take over Oct. 11-12, 18-19 and 25-26. The zoo will open early for Sensory Friendly Hours on Oct. 11 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Tickets and information are available at www.philadelphiazoo.org.
“Autumn is such a special time at the zoo,” said Philadelphia Zoo President & CEO Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman. “As we begin to enjoy the cooler temperatures, many of our animals do, too. Our tree canopy changes from its vibrant greens to the sunny yellows, golden oranges and ruby reds that our local leaf peepers do not want to miss. And of course, we love to see the adorable scenes happening across our campus as trick-or-treaters dressed as tigers, giraffes and more greet their real-life counterparts.”
This year’s festivities include a half-dozen new ways for families and friends to fall into the spooky season spirit, including the debut of a not-so-scary haunted house, new Halloween-themed train rides, lively costume parades, Pumpkin Putt Putt, Frightful Flora and educational activities.
Also look for a full line-up of pumpkin feedings and animal enrichments, including hippos, big cats, aquatic turtles, orangutans, gorillas, birds, giant tortoises and Rodrigues fruit bats.
“Boo at the Zoo is easily one of the best and most popular times to visit the Zoo,” said Vice President of Marketing and Communications Patrick McMaster. “The zoo has been hosting this event for more than 20 years and each year we add something new for families to enjoy. This year, the can’t miss activity is the Trick-or-Tree House, complete with spooky decorations, a lively dance party, and of course, an additional candy stop.”
For guests looking for guaranteed parking and a chance to beat the crowd, the Zoo is offering its popular Wake Up With Wildlife Premium Tours on Oct. 12 and 19. Tours start at 8:30 a.m., and for the Halloween season, include a final stop and tour inside The Solitude, the oldest, and rumored to be most haunted, building at the zoo.

Elmwood Park Zoo
Elmwood Park Zoo’s highly anticipated annual Boo at the Zoo will take place every weekend through Oct. 26.
“Boo at the Zoo is one of our most popular traditions, bringing the community together for a safe, exciting, and memorable Halloween celebration,” said Al Zone, executive director and CEO of Elmwood Park Zoo. “We love seeing families make this event part of their fall tradition year after year.”
During this family-friendly Halloween event, guests will discover the zoo decked out in festive, not-too-spooky décor. Children are encouraged to arrive in costume with treat bags in hand, ready to collect candy at stations located throughout the zoo. Adults are also welcome to join in the fun by donning their most creative Halloween attire.
In addition to exploring the zoo’s exhibits and visiting favorite animals, Boo at the Zoo guests can enjoy:
• Musical performances
• Hay bale maze
• Specialty drink offerings at Zoo Brew
• Unique animal encounters
Boo at the Zoo activities are included with regular paid zoo admission and run during standard operating hours, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 11-12, Oct. 18-19 and Oct. 25-26.
